Rinse FM Marcus Nasty interview about the UK Scene, Viagra and Big Narstie

1.Tell me what does Rinse Fm mean to you and the listeners?

MN: Rinse was the only station playing 24/7 underground UK music but has grown into the main world station pushing worldwide underground music whilst still focused on the UK Underground as if we think about it logically the UK is the musical hub of the world in terms of how many countries our own home grown Genres get played in all over the world! Example: US has hip hop and R&B, Jamaica has dancehall reggae bashment, Africa has afrobeats we have Drum & Bass, garage, dubstep, grime, UK Funky Bassline and Bass all of which I have personally heard in every country I’ve ever visited and rinse helped to establish that much more than anybody else or brand could ever claim.

2.House has definately evolved is this the last hype genre as we had so many?

MN: No way hahahahaha the uk is not only good at inventing new Genres we are also very good at reinventing and evolving already established genres so I’m pretty sure there is more to come

3.Where do you like to shop in London?

MN: Any shop that has Viagra, Cialis or Kamagra under the counter 😊

4.Are you feeling the grime scene at present and who do you have your eye on as the next great?

MN:The Grime scene at the moment is doing really well although the levels of the Mcs in it can be compared to a third world country I.e there are those that are very rich or very poor no in between so my point is you have ya skeptas and stormzy’s etc then you have the rest who are scraping together what bookings/work they can but having said that it’s still a very healthy scene and I can see that the past mistakes of us all either verbally being abusive or just outright scrapping no longer exists as it clear to see the scene is now united and even when there is a clash 99% of time it’s done in good taste and not a full on war

5.You have really helped push Birmingham artists more so than any other london dj what made you pay interest to artists outside of london?

MN: Because it’s like you lot got something in the water and when I find out what it is I want some 😂
Having said that I always have my eye out for talent my thing is that there is no point being a big fish in a small pond so I go out my way to help the uk music scene constantly it need not even be a scene that I’m involved in either I just recognise what we have as a nation more than the percentage of people who defo should know better do and should actually be celebrating what the uk has achieved over the past 25 years musically AND if I’m real honest I’ve found the most talent in Birmingham which naturally is why I’ve ended up helping so many from there. Please bare in mind that I didn’t give anybody there talent they always had it all I did was help them to get where they deserve to be alot quicker!!

6.Will pirate radio always be needed or could it die?

MN:Pirate started dying out when the Internet took off properly and music became alot more accessible and so whereas back in the day you could only hear real underground music on pirate radio stations we now have 1 xtra, kiss fresh, capital xtra, rinse fm etc all pushing underground music in a much more professional manner than the pirates can as well as being able to now get the music before the pirates do.

7.Name some of the artists Rinse has helped to break?

MN:Rinse or me?

If you are asking about rinse I can only say:

Katy B

MN:If you are asking about me well we will be here all day so probably best to save for another interview lol but I will say this I helped pioneer and found the grime scene, I personally founded UK Funky and have now played a major hand in the creation of the UK Bass scene and am currently the ambassador and founder of it. so if you think about all the people that came from those scenes/genres that may give you an insight as to how many people ive helped out

8.I heard you give a shout to Big Narstie for his work with Craig David did he really not have the mic passed to him?

MN:Big Narstie has always been one of the more lyrical mcs and has bars for days and if I’m honest that nigga wouldn’t give back the mic until he had at least spat over two tunes lol even though he is sick we all know it’s a 8 to a 16 or even a 32 bar maximum when you are in a group so it’s best to stick to that but not Big Narstie oh no not that fucker he has more bars than Chip Ghetts and wiley put together so he utilised them every single time so the mcs wanna give it over as who is really gonna take it back if he don’t wanna give it he is fucking huuuuuge lol

I know not one of them would moan now though I would more expect them to offer to let him spit however long he wants just to be part of his campaign or at the least just be around him (I hate this about the music scene)

9.Whats the most memorable place you have played and would love to relive?

Ayia Napa is my fave as got some sick memories their and go every year but Gambia and Prague are joint 2nd and Croatia for the outlook festival has to be no 1 (was late for our boat party so got taken to it on a police boat while high of our faces and very shook)

10. Finally, Marcus Nasty top ten tracks on i.pod.
