Double Platinum artist, Newton Faulkner is in the middle of his UK tour following the release of his third studio album, Write It On Your Skin. We at The Phoenix were lucky enough to see him perform live in concert at the O2 Academy in Birmingham.
Write It On Your Skin is a return to form for an artist who has a very unique style to his performances. By tapping and hitting, as well as actually playing the guitar, he is a one man band who reaches into various different genres to create his own trademark style.
Supporting Newton in Birmingham were two acts. One, a solo artist by the name of Sam Brookes was a soulful, blues inspired singer/songwriter from London who opened the night, instantly warming the crowd to him, and getting them ready for what was to come. Colour The Atlas followed Sam, a four piece band from Swindon, who produced an atmospheric, semi-acoustic performance, feeding into the crowds energy.
Newton came on to rapturous applause, and started the show with the first track on the new album, Pulling Teeth, which was to be the first of a staggering 19 song set list for the evening. As well as performing all but one track from Write It On Your Skin, Newton also played a few crowd favourites, from his first album, such as Dream Catch Me, I Need Something, and his version of the Massive Attack hit Teardrop.
I Took It Out On You, from Rebuilt By Humans made an appearance as well as covers of Payphone by Maroon 5 and Superstition by Stevie Wonder. Later in the evening, Ryan Keane joined Newton on stage to produce a stunning dual guitar performance before the night was rounded off by 3 final songs.
